VernacularVernacular is a piece of software created for Howard Goldkrand and Beth Coleman. It is an art piece, meant to be experienced with wall projections and surround sound. Pieces of media float around the screen, moving with the classic boids flocking algorithm. Sound (from video or audio clips) is fully spatialized in three dimensions. The interface is meant to be slightly disorienting, slightly video gamey, very modern. It is still under continual development, so the version here is newer than the version at EAI. Take a look at some screenshots of Vernacular in action. Vernacular was premiered at EAI in New York in April 2003, and is now travelling the world. It is freely available for download, and runs on Mac OS X 10.2.3 or above. Here is the artist's statement: "Vernacular is an interactive software droid. It is an associate data processor whose function is to augment our use and understanding of the information culture in which we are immersed. We're artists of the Star Wars generation. We grew up with cybernetic visions of a twenty-first century. Buck Rodgers looked old school, our future was intelligent robots like R2D2 that did not merely respond, but transformed the data flow around us. Vernacular addresses the meta-language of "infomatix". It is a software in which the associative patterns of one's data is rendered in molecular form. Written in Open GL, Vernacular is based on a flocking algorithm."

Type SlugType Slug is a program to preview fonts. It can display both any font supported by Mac OS X, installed or not. It is very easy to use: just drag fonts onto its icon or into the list. You can customize the preview line and view a full paragraph of text. It was created before Panther's Font Book provided this ability. You can view a screenshot, or just download it. This was more useful before Panther came out with Font Book, but it remains appealing for its simplicity. |

BillingThere is a lot of software out there for freelancers who want to track their time. This is mine. It is somewhat idiosyncratic, behaving the way I wanted it to at the time. It has a decent feature set for a bit of procastination:
